A Long-Term System for Technical English
A sustainable method for terminology, sentence patterns, close reading, project writing and periodic review.
Learning Goal
Technical English is not a contest to memorize the most words. The goal is accurate reading of datasheets, official documentation and papers, plus clear, concise and verifiable descriptions of your own work.
Progress through keyword recognition, complete-sentence understanding, paragraph structure and independent technical writing. Practice input and output together so vocabulary lookup turns into usable language.
Learn Terms in Collocations
Ordinary words often have specialized meanings: drive can mean driving a pin or load, while assert can mean placing a digital signal in its active state. Record context rather than a Chinese gloss alone.
Term: propagation delay
Meaning: delay from input change to output response
Collocation: maximum propagation delay
Context: The output changes after the specified propagation delay.
My sentence: The timing constraint must include the propagation delay of the device.
Useful collocations include meet the timing requirement, sample the input signal, configure the peripheral, allocate a buffer, handle an interrupt, reduce power consumption, introduce measurement error and under normal operating conditions.
Identify the Function of a Sentence
Technical sentences define, instruct, explain cause, compare tradeoffs, state conditions, warn or conclude. Identifying that function is faster than translating word by word.
Definition and Description
Use structures such as X is defined as, X refers to, X is used to and X consists of.
Cause and Result
Separate symptom, cause and consequence: The sampling clock was unstable, which caused occasional frame errors.
Comparison and Tradeoff
State the improved metric and the cost: Although A is faster, it requires more memory. Avoid writing only that one option is “better.”
Conditions and Limits
Phrases such as valid only when, must not be operated above and unless otherwise specified carry requirements. must, shall, should and may do not have the same force.
Decompose Long Sentences
- Find the main subject and verb.
- Mark clauses introduced by
that,which,whenorif. - Temporarily remove prepositional and parenthetical details.
- Decide whether the sentence describes an action, condition or conclusion.
- Restore parameters, ranges and exceptions.
In When the enable signal is asserted, the controller, which is driven by the system clock, starts sampling the input after two clock cycles, the core is the controller starts sampling the input; the remaining phrases give condition, clock context and delay.
Read Datasheets by Task
Do not always read page one to the end. Follow the current engineering question:
- Functional block diagram.
- Pin directions, multiplexing and active levels.
- Absolute maximum ratings versus recommended operation.
- Electrical and timing tables with min/typ/max units.
- Timing diagrams and named edges.
- Initialization, reset values and application examples.
Use diagrams and tables to establish context before looking up every unknown word.
Read Documentation and Papers Differently
Official documentation emphasizes prerequisites, steps, parameters, return values and constraints. Papers emphasize the problem, related work, contribution, experimental setup and whether results support the claim.
For a first pass, read title and abstract, figures, conclusion and introduction. Then inspect method and experiments. Notes should contain the core conclusion, terms and sentence patterns, your own explanation, project relevance and unresolved questions—not copied paragraphs.

Repository Structure
Prefer short active sentences. Summarize what was built, how it was implemented and how far it was verified. Replace words such as perfect or very advanced with test results, measurements and known limitations.
Write Useful Commits and Debug Logs
Good commit results include Add UART receive timeout handling, Fix QPSK reference-bit alignment and Document FPGA pin assignments. Avoid update or fix bug without scope.
Use a stable debug format:
Symptom: What was observed?
Cause: What produced the problem?
Fix: What changed?
Verification: How was the fix confirmed?
Weekly Routine
- Day 1: collect ten terms and real examples from current documentation.
- Day 2: closely read one datasheet section and decompose three long sentences.
- Day 3: explain one technical idea in under 100 English words.
- Day 4: revise a README or lab record.
- Day 5: review without Chinese definitions and write new examples.
- Weekend: rewrite an older note for greater accuracy and concision.
Self-Check
- Did I record collocations rather than translations alone?
- Can I identify the sentence core, condition and limit?
- Can I distinguish recommended values from absolute maximum ratings?
- Can I explain a module's input, processing and output?
- Does my project description include evidence and limitations?
- Did I avoid unsupported promotional language?
- Have I used each new term in my own sentence?
